A carbon fiber quote is only as good as the RFQ behind it. Missing layup schedule, undefined finish, or an obvious-but-unmarked tolerance turns a 2 week quote into a 6 week clarification loop.
7 categories every CFRP RFQ needs
Geometry and dimensions: thickness, panel size, critical features, GD&T, ±0.1mm surfaces.
Fiber specification: 3K/6K/12K tow, plain/twill/UD, areal weight.
Resin system: epoxy type, cure temperature, minimum Tg, chemical or UV resistance.
Laminate design: ply orientation, target thickness, fiber volume fraction, symmetry rule.
Surface and cosmetic grade: structural only, B-side, A-side, pinhole limit, gloss level.
Quantity and schedule: prototype qty, annual volume, ramp, hard go-live date.
Quality and certification: ISO 9001, AS9100, FAI, NDT method, documentation level.
Application context suppliers cannot guess
Replace aluminum bracket? Cut 40% weight. Operating -10C to 85C? UV and humidity? Static or cyclic load? Safety factor? A weak RFQ says reduce weight. A useful RFQ says replace aluminum bracket, 40% lighter, 100 N static, 3x safety factor, 85C max, FOB target USD 4.50/pc.
Drawing control
One released revision only. STEP for 3D, PDF for 2D, BOM if assembly. Never let supplier quote a moving target.
Common blind spots
Symmetric layup not stated, plate warps after cut.
Surface grade not stated, supplier assumes structural only, cosmetic reject.
NDT not stated, aerospace buyer expects ultrasonic C-scan, gets tap test.
Resin Tg not stated, part sees 120C, standard epoxy creeps.
Buyer checklist before send
Current revision locked
3K or 12K stated
Resin and Tg stated
Layup symmetry stated
Finish grade stated
Prototype and annual qty stated
NDT and FAI stated if needed
Incomplete RFQ gets assumed. Assumptions cost money. Complete RFQ gets a price you can compare.
FAQ
Q: What is the minimum info for a prototype quote?
A: STEP or PDF, thickness, 3K twill or UD, epoxy, 5 pcs, tolerance, and whether cosmetic or structural.
Q: Do I always need AS9100?
A: No. Industrial and prototype parts need ISO 9001 and FAI. Aerospace structural parts need AS9100 and traceability.
Q: Why does symmetric layup matter in RFQ?
A: Asymmetric plates relax and warp after CNC cut. Stating symmetric layup removes post-machining surprise.
