Why Thickness Selection Matters
Carbon fiber sheets are not "one size fits all." The same 3K twill plate at 1mm and 10mm behave like completely different materials - one bends under finger pressure, the other can replace a steel fixture. Choosing wrong means overspending on material you don't need, or worse, part failure in the field.
At Guangdong Shenyang New Material Technology Co., Ltd. (广东神扬新材料科技有限公司), we CNC-cut CFRP sheets from 0.2mm to 120mm daily for buyers across drones, automotive, medical, and industrial sectors. Below is the practical thickness selection chart our sales engineers use when reviewing RFQs.

How to Choose: 4 Key Questions
1. What load will the sheet carry?
Static display / cosmetic → 0.5mm – 1mm
Light dynamic load (vibration, small forces) → 2mm – 3mm
Structural load-bearing → 4mm – 6mm
Heavy industrial / medical equipment → 8mm – 12mm+
2. Will you CNC machine it?
Thinner sheets (<2mm) machine cleanly but warp easily if ply layup is asymmetric. Thicker sheets (4mm+) hold flatness better after cutting but require longer tool life and slower feed rates.
3. What's your flatness tolerance?
Standard commercial: ±0.2mm warp over 300mm
Precision industrial: ±0.1mm or better
Critical (medical/optics): ±0.05mm, requires stress-relieved layup
4. Weight budget?
Carbon fiber is ~40% lighter than aluminium at equal stiffness. But thickness still adds up - a 10mm plate is roughly 15kg/m². If weight is critical (drones, portable equipment), stay at 2mm–4mm and use rib structures instead of going thicker.
Common Buyer Mistakes
❌ Over-specifying thickness - Ordering 6mm when 4mm would handle the load. Result: unnecessary cost, harder machining, heavier final product.
❌ Under-specifying for CNC - Designing 0.5mm plates with tight tolerance holes. Result: edge delamination, dimensional drift after cutting.
❌ Ignoring ply orientation - A 4mm plate with all 0° plies bends easily across the grain. Symmetric cross-ply layup is essential for flatness after machining.
❌ Not telling the supplier the application - We can often recommend a thinner, cheaper option if we know it's for static display vs. dynamic load.
