Acceptable drawing file formats
STEP / IGES are our preferred 3D file formats. These two formats retain complete 3‑dimensional geometry data for composite part analysis, mold making and CNC programming. SolidWorks native files (SLDPRT) can also work if there is no version compatibility issue. PDF 2‑D drawings are necessary for documenting tolerances, material requirements and notes, even when you provide 3D models.
File formats we try to avoid
STL files are mainly used for 3D printing. They only contain surface mesh information without true solid geometry. We do not recommend STL for carbon‑fiber custom‑part production, because it lacks precise dimensional and tolerance data. Images, JPG or PNG pictures alone cannot be used for manufacturing, they can only serve as visual reference.
Key information to include inside your drawings
Define overall dimensions, wall thickness and laminate thickness on your drawings. Mark critical tolerance requirements for key fitting surfaces. Write down material specifications such as carbon fiber grade, weave style and surface finish. Add assembly notes if your parts need to fit with other components.
Drawing preparation notes
Please check unit setting before sending files, confirm your unit is millimetre rather than inch. Mismatched unit is one of the most frequent mistakes in custom carbon‑fiber projects. If you have special requirements for fiber orientation and ply stacking, state these requirements clearly in your 2D drawing or separate specification sheet.
Common mistakes buyers should avoid
Sending only pictures or renders without any 3D CAD files and expecting us to develop parts for production. Providing STL mesh files as the main manufacturing source file. Forgotten to specify tolerances, so we have to assume general tolerance values. Mixing inch and millimetre units, resulting in wrong‑sized prototypes.
