How Peel Ply Works

During lay‑up work, technicians place peel ply directly on top of the carbon fiber laminate stack. When vacuum bagging and autoclave curing start, excess resin bleeds out from composite and soaks into the peel ply fabric. After full resin curing, you tear away this sacrificial layer. Removing peel ply leaves a uniform matte textured surface on CFRP parts, without manual sanding.

Core Purposes of Using Peel Ply

1.Controlled resin bleed: Absorbs surplus resin from laminate, helps stabilise final fibre‑to‑resin ratio.

2.Creates consistent bonding surface: The rough matte surface after peel ply removal offers excellent adhesion for subsequent gluing, painting or secondary bonding operations.

3.Protect part surface during curing: Shields carbon fiber surface from contamination by release agent, vacuum bag film residues.

4.Reduces pre‑treatment work: Eliminates heavy hand‑sanding work before painting and bonding, saves labour time.

Common Mistakes with Peel Ply Application

1.Forget to remove peel ply: Leaving peel ply on finished parts will completely destroy adhesion performance for paint and adhesive. It is only a processing aid, not part of final product.

2.Wrong peel ply material selection: Using fabric that cannot tear cleanly will leave tiny fibre residues stuck to carbon‑fiber surface. Residues cause poor bonding defects.

3.Improper lay‑up direction: Peel ply must not be folded or creased; wrinkles will transfer unwanted texture onto composite surface.

Conclusion

Peel ply does not improve the intrinsic mechanical strength of carbon‑fiber parts. It is a vital process auxiliary focusing on surface quality and downstream manufacturability. For composite manufacturers, correct use of peel ply is a simple yet effective way to minimise surface‑related quality issues.
